The following and only oboe sonata by Bach's pupil Johann Philipp Kirnberger (1721-1783) first appeared in the compilation Vermischte Musikalien, printed in Berlin by Georg Ludwig Winter and dated 14 January 1769. The works it contains are dedicated to Kirnberger's employer Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia (1723-1787); Kirnberger was her court musician from 1758, and taught her composition as well as setting up her remarkable music library. The preface to these Vermischte Musikalien addresses, among other things, the two unequal temperament tunings published by Kirnberger in 1766 in his Clavierübungen.
