Jurrian Andriessen (1925-96) was a scion of a leading Dutch family of composers, being the son of Hendrik (1892-1981), and the elder brother of Louis (1939-). Jurriaan was at one time a composition pupil of Messiaen, and went on to become known as a composer of symphonic, chamber and stage works, and also of film scores. Latterly he was a pioneer in the use of computers in composition.
In its 5 minutes, the 'Serenade' embraces a wide range of styles: the strumming guitar serenade of the opening moderato section, the driving rhythms of the middle section (in a contemporary minimalist-inspired style) and - surprisingly - the calm final section, which is reminiscent of a pop ballad. This would make a fine recital piece, and deserves to be better-known internationally.
