Rondeau is the second of ten pieces of incidental music composed by Henry Purcell for Abdelazer, a play by 17th century dramatist, Aphra Behn. The music dates from the last year of Purcell’s life, 1695, and just a few months after the Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary. Originally scored for strings, Rondeau is often heard these days as an arrangement or thematic basis, a notable example being Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.
This version of Rondeau, for trombone trio, is one of a number of arrangements commissioned by the London Mozart Players with National Lottery funding and first performed along with another Warwick publication, Dido Realiz’d, by the London Mozart Players trombone section on period instruments at Finchcock’s Musical Museum on 18th July 1998.
