without a great body of repertoire by the most famous composers, it is neat to know that this is the only piece that Edward Elgar composed for a solo wind instrument with orchestra. Composed in 1910 and originally for bassoon and orchestra, the more oft-performed reduction for bassoon and piano is perfectly suitable for performance on the bass clarinet. With only one note outside of the range of a standard-range bass clarinet, rather than create two separate solo parts, I chose to simply include an alternate option for the out-of-range note (the low C-sharp in measure 39). Admittedly, as I was in the midst of re-engraving the piano score, I came to realize that there was simply no way that I would be able to do justice to such an intricately engraved score. Thus, I opted to leave the original (public domain) score intact, and augmented it a bit by adding measure numbers that should help facilitate rehearsal and performance. A formative moment in my musical career was as a high school student, hearing my future bassoon teacher, Jeff Keesecker, perform this for a class full of ambitious and eager students at a band festival. Since then, I’ve always had a great deal of admiration for this piece and I hope it can bring the same amount of enjoyment to bass clarinet soloists as well. Matt Johnston
