Product description

Léopold Wallner, son of an Austrian father and a Polish mother, was born in Kiev on 27 November 1847. His father was a music publisher whose home was always open to composers and performers. Among the regular guests was Franz Liszt, who became young Wallner's mentor. This artistic atmosphere engendered in him a wish to devote himself entirely to music. In 1866 the family moved to Brussels, where he attended university. His father's sudden death in 1867 compelled Léopold to earn his living by teaching. Financial need meant that with strict discipline he essentially taught himself composition, while also pursuing his literary interests, which in later years would make him a sought-after critic of Belgian cultural life. As a member of the arts department at Belgium's Royal Academy, his lectures and symposia had a considerable influence on the art scene. He was soon a highly regarded composer. Contemporaries thought his works had great originality, praised their perfect writing and the classical romantic ardour inherent in his numerous programmatic genre pieces, particularly. The publication of his last work, the Sonate Romantique for piano, inspired admirers to organize an intimate celebration in the Salle Erard: The hall was crammed full that night. Many friends heard there some of the composer's loveliest and most original works, brilliantly performed and applauded. The hero of the evening was enthusiastically cheered by all. This homage was also addressed to him for being an untiring sponsor of young talents, a versatile visionary scholar and the author of philosophical treatises and studies of History's Secrets. Wallner lived a life of work and sacrifice for art and teaching's sake. Always sickly, he died in 1913 in Brussels. His output as a composer reveals the clear influence of programmatic, descriptive tendencies in tuneful genres with a virtuoso finish. His many Elegies, Suites, Songs, Mazurkas, Intermezzi, Rhapsodies, Canzonettas, Fantasies and Scherzi are examples of the very best storytelling, often addressed to less favoured instruments such as the oboe, harp, cor anglais, viola and horn. The present Rhapsodie and the Berceuse pour alto et piano, first published in 1909 by Schott frères in Brussels, are excellent examples. The culmination of his vocal output was the lastingly popular Album musical de la Jeune Belgique, mélodies et morceaux pour chant et piano of 1895, 14 melodies set to poems by Gilkin, Giraud, Severin and others.
