Original Version only for the left hand 1932 - dedicated to Paul Wittgenstein This work has been composed by Franz Schmidt and dedicated to Paul Wittgenstein. The Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein lost his right arm at the age of twenty-seven during the First World War. Nevertheless he was determined to continue his career. Great composers such as Ravel and Strauss wrote concertos for him, through which he gained international reputation. 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. For the very first time this piano quintet that Franz Schmidt composed for Paul Wittgenstein has now been published in its original left-hand version. For many years this work was only available in the two-hand arrangement of Friedrich Wührer. More recently, a number of pianists have actively represented the return to the original arrangement with resounding success.
