Product description

Ernst Naumann, grandson of the famous Johann Gottlieb Naumann, capellmeister to the elector of Dresden, was born on 25th August 1832 in Freiberg (Saxony). After the reprinting of his great Serenade (Nonet) for winds and strings, op. 10 (Amadeus BP 2623), the Three Fantasy Pieces for Viola and Piano op. 5 (BP 1328), his string trio op. 12 (BP 2357), the Trio in f minor op. 7 for Pianoforte, Violin and Viola (BP 1541) and the magnificent string quintet in E flat major op. 13 (BP 1578), we now present his posthumous String Quartet in d minor, whose extremely carefully written set of parts, was found included in a bound convolute of string quartets in a music lover's library.

The young Ernst Naumann owed his thorough musical training to Moritz Hauptmann and E. Friedrich Richter (piano), and Johann Schneider, court organist in Dresden. This was complemented by solid scientific studies at Leipzig university; he graduated in 1858 with a valuable dissertation on The various definitions of pitch proportions and the meaning of the Pythagorean perfect fifths system for music today. In the early eighteen-fifties he presented a series of works that created a stir among Leipzig's composers and were much praised by Robert Schumann, who foresaw a future as composer for the gifted young musician. Besides delicate compositions for viola (his favourite instrument) and piano (Sonata op. 1), Naumann published several distinguished, formally balanced chamber works in the Classicist style: two string quintets op. 6 and op. 13, the string quartet op. 9 and the string trio op. 12, for decades part of the standard repertoire.

In 1860 Naumann was named music director and city organist in Jena, where he remained for 50 years. Working in this quiet scholarly town was more to his taste than making a big impression in the loud torrent of Time. Yet he managed to turn the academic concerts into important events within the musical New German movement. In Jena, besides his activity as conductor, choir conductor and organist, Naumann devoted himself increasingly to the publication and transcription of Classical masterpieces. He lavished scrupulous care on innumerable piano scores and transcriptions; these include piano duet arrangements of Mozart's quartets and quintets and Beethoven's symphonies, Handel's concertos, and many pieces by Mendelssohn** and Schumann. In 1892, with Dörffel and Waldersee, he took over and completed the editing of the great Bach edition. His next great undertaking was a performing edition of Bach's organ works and piano concertos. After 1906 this tireless worker undertook the task of preparing all Joseph Haydn's string quartets for publication. Ernst Naumann was working on this when he died, on the 25th of December 1910, in Jena.
