Some important, even brilliant chamber music works of French high romanticism are forgotten only because their creators' main output - opera - has been unable to establish itself in the genre's repertory as practised by today's music industry. This was also the fate of Ambroise Thomas. The grace, noble elegance and occasionally dramatically accented 'purity of writing' of his few instrumental works exemplify what is best in the French sensitive and contrapuntal style. The early chamber pieces, written around 1835, include a string quintet for 2 violins, viola, violoncello and double bass op. 7 and a piano trio beside the present string quartet. We present the quartet (for the first time in score) according to the undated first print of the parts, titled: P R EMI E R / QUAT U O R / Pour deux Violons / Alto et Violoncelle, / DÉDIÉ / à M. Charles Giraud, / par son ami / AMBROISE THOMAS. / OEuv: 1e.r / Prix: 6f / Propriété de lÆEditeur. / A PARIS, chez RICHAULT.
