Fröhlich wrote the string quartet in E major in 1827/28 during his second stay in Berlin. Harmonic diction, compositional technique and contrapuntal writing are brilliantly original. Elements of the work herald the inventive gifts of a Mendelssohn or Schumann 'in its highly romantic, melodically expressive, tender, heartfelt and subtle nuances of feeling'. All four movements build chord sequences of tense sensitivity. Perhaps this music does indeed offer those 'wonders which are the mark of a genius', as connoisseurs have sometimes described Fröhlich's chamber music. The autograph of the quartet is kept in the University Libary of Basel. Apart from a few obvious slips of the pen, the beautifully flowing calligraphy is impeccable; a few inconsistencies of phrasing and dynamics were easy to adjust by analogy.
