Unpublished until now, this Quartet in c minor by Carl Czerny, grand master of the piano study, is a grave and pathos-laden work, rich in melody. Czerny’s cyclic instrumental creations soon revealed internalizing forms of expression in a way that can be compared to the idiom of Schubert. A hint of romanticism pervades each of the quartet’s movements.
The Andantino’s seductive tonal beauty, offset by dramatic interludes, gives way to a spirited Scherzo featuring contrapuntal imitations. The Finale is full of storm and stress, while remaining classical in form. The discovery of his chamber music is particularly valuable for the light it sheds on Beethoven’s compositional techniques: “The boy has talent: I will teach him myself and take him on as my pupil.” Pupil Czerny repaid him with “friendship until his last days.”
Our edition has been prepared from the manuscript parts kept by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna under shelfmark 31824, which are full of corrections.
