In 1706 the young Johann Sebastian Bach traveled to Lübeck to study at the St. Marien Church there with one of the giants of his time: Dieterich Buxtehude. Bach was fascinated by this extraordinary musician and overstayed his vacation by three months. It would be difficult to find another composer from the time before Bach who left such a large, important and variegated organ oeuvre.
The Buxtehude edition stands out from the series of 'North German Organ Masters' not only because of its scope. Rarely has an edition of complete organ works faced such tremendous difficulties, which result from the loss of all the autographs and the inordinate amount of errors contained in the scribes' copies. Klaus Beckmann began his fundamental revision in 1995 based on the most recent musicological findings and documented in an extensive commentary (preface and critical notes).
