Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) was one of the greatest pianists of his time and a composer of exceptional abilities. Ries studied pianoforte (but not composition) with Beethoven in Vienna and the two men remained on cordial terms for the rest of their lives. In the last year of his life Ries co-wrote a book of Beethoven reminiscences that remain one of the most valuable sources of information about his life and character. The Variations for Pianoforte & Flute on a Portuguese Hymn was composed in 1826 and published two years later in London, along with another set of variations, by Clementi, Collard & Collard. The theme is the famous hymn Adeste Fideles which Ries's English public would have known as O Come, All Ye Faithful, an eighteenth-century hymn, now associated with Christmas, that is generally believed to have been composed by J F Wade (1710-1786). Ries's decision - or that of the publisher - not to use the theme's vernacular title is puzzling particularly as the work was clearly intended for the domestic market. Perhaps the title owes something to its dedicatee, Mrs Wergifosse, who, whether English or Portuguese, flautist or pianist, must surely have been pleased with Ries's sparkling variations.
