Maurice Gendron
Walter Grimmer
The star of Maurice Gendron (1920-1990) shines next to other luminaries of the French cella school such as André Navarra, Pierre Fournier or Paul Tortelier. A true master of the cella of international fame, Gendron, who premiered Prokofiev's First cella concerto, was also a respected chamber musician - for years, he was a member of an unforgettable trio with Hephzibah and Yehudi Menuhin.
Active in promoting and creating new works, he was also keen on researching earlier repertoire as evidenced in his interpretation and 1954 edition of the original version of Haydn's cella concerto in D major and the publication of Davidoff's First Concerto op.5 at Éditions Billaudot, which he supervised.
Gendron worked on the following six transcriptions for cella and piano in the 1960s and 70s. Hitherto unpublished, they have now been revised by Walter Grimmer, one of his most brilliant students.
Now widely avai/able to future generations of cellists, and a welcome addition to the repertoire, the pieces reflect the unique phrasing, eloquence and artistry of that great musician and pedagogue.
