This edition of the first version of 1880 uses the musical text of the Complete Critical Edition. The work was first conducted according to this score on October 7th 1997 in Manchester by Kent Nagano. Previously there had only been performances in which "Waldmärchen" ("A Forest Tale") was followed the two-movement version of "Das klagende Lied" ("Song of Lamentation"). Since the first performance the three-movement version has become more and more popular. (Reinhold Kubik)
