Dance of the Polar Bears is a composition in one movement, approximately 10 minutes in length. Its title is inspired by its middle section in which bassoons 3 and 4 (switching to contrabassoon halfway through the passage) lay down a slow, rumbling bass line. This evoked in me the surreal image of a bunch of these big, white, furry fellows happily dancing with each otherà
The piece starts out with a slow introduction, leading into the up-tempo Thelonious Monk-inspired main theme. It is presented in the form of AABA with the B-section featuring R&B-like material. Subsequently, the composition goes through a series of funky bass line variations with bassoons 1 and 2 on top as 'featured soloists'. Thereafter, the piece slows down. Material from the introduction gets reintroduced and things lead into the above-mentioned slow 'dance' passage.
Following a lyrical section, in which the contrabassoon takes over the melody, the pace picks up again. A funky interlude prepares the return of the main theme, this time slightly extended to AABAA. An energetic coda in uneven meters closes out the piece.
