One could think of Corazón, horizonte y río - heart, horizon and river as a sort of haiku or picture. It is a sort of candombe, in a kind of quiet and personal way, but it is always a candombe, music and dance from and developed by the black people on both sides of the Río de la Plata, Uruguay - Argentina, Montevideo - Buenos Aires. Although each of both these coasts gives the candombe its own special character and particularities, its basis is in the drums and syncopated rhythms of its African heritage, one of the most important characteristics of Latin-American music. The milonga and the milongón have their origin in the candombe, just as the tango has. Perhaps this music speaks about the contemplation of the horizon, the sky and the river from each one of these shorelines. The horizon appears as a mirror of our hopes and longing, or maybe it is just the line of the mouth, with the upper lip defining the sky and the lower lip the water, while this mouth quotes poems in the language of the waves.
