Two playful and sernsitive little “harpsichord concertos”, rooted in High Baroque yet foreshadowing early classical style, have come down to us from Johann Philipp Kirnberger.
The source for the present Concerto in g minor is a copy of the parts kept in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek, Preussischer Kulturbesitz, under shelfmark Mus. ms. 11630. The work evidently found a publisher, as it was announced by Breitkopf, with the incipit of the first movement, in Supplement VI, page 432, of the 1771 “Thematic Catalogue”; this dates the composition to before 1771.
That printed edition is still lost. The title page of our source reads: “Concerto ex G / per il / Cembalo Concertato / accompagnato / da / Violino primo / Violino Secondo / Viola e / Violoncello / dall Sig: Kirnberger: / Incipit”. The bass in the harpsichord is figured between the solo entries, as was usual at the time. The separate basso part is unfigured. The realization is given in small type.
