The fact that the fourth volume of the Música Ibérica series is dedicated exclusively to José Costa y Hugas is meant to emphasize the importance of the few extant works of this composer. He studied the works of classical composers such as Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart - this influence can be traced not only in his original compositions, but also in his transcriptions. He learnt the guitar in Barcelona with Buenaventura Bassols, who was an important link between Fernando Sor and the Catalan guitarists of the second half of the 19th century.
