Pompeo Natale was born in Ripatransone, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, presumably in the early 17th century. His artistic activity - for the little we know of it - was centered exclusively in Lazio: he was in Tivoli in 1651-52 as maestro di cappella and organist in the Duomo, and successively in Rome, where he was maestro di cappella in the church of S. Maria Maggiore. In Rome Natale founded a music-school, which became his primary activity, and where many eminent musicians studied, among whom Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni. There is no further biographical information available concerning Natale: the last year of documented activity which can be found on texts is 1681. The ten pieces in the present collection are taken from Solfeggiamenti a due e tre voci per cantare e suonare, published in Rome in 1674. His remaining works were all published in Rome: Madrigali a 3 v. pari (1656); Madrigali e Canzoni spirituali e morali a 2 e 3 v. (1662); Libro II de Solfeggiamenti per cantare, suonare con diversi strumenti... (1681); the motet Dominus adjutor meus, published in F. Silvestri's Sacras Cantiones duabus variis vocibus (1672).
