The present volume contains a selection of my favourite pieces from more than 160 books in the series 'Music for Guitar' by Prof. Karl Scheit. It does not contain dry 'practice material'. lts purpose is to awaken pleasure and fun in music making. The pieces are grouped in musical epochs and the level of difficulty within the groups ranges between 2 and 3. Karl Scheit's original notation and fingerings have been retained because, on the one hand, they are as valid as ever and, on the other, they present a much discussed testimony of his musical and technical approach. A CD accompanies the book. It will help players learn the pieces, or listening to it may simply give impulses for experimentation. The recordings are in no sense meant as the only possible reading of the music. Unfortunately, we had to omit the music of the 20th and 21st centuries from this volume because of the great technical and musical demands it makes on the player. This is particularly regrettable as Karl Scheit himself inspired and edited many important works for the guitar through his dedication to the creation of a repertoire of quality music for the guitar. I would like to mention, in this regard, the works by H. E. Apostel, R. R. Bennett, F. Martin, A. Uhl, to name but a few, which have appeared in this 'series'. Special thanks go to Prof. Luise Scheit and Prof. Konrad Ragossnig for their great support. In memory of Prof. Karl Scheit (1909-1993) Vienna, December 2002 Alexander Swete.
