The Sechs Lieder op. 89 are one of the most exquisitely Viennese of all works written by Mauro Giuliani (Bisceglie 1781 - Naples 1829). Whilst the melodic style of these pieces at times reveals the composer's Italian origins, it is above all in the neat elegance and harmonic richness of the instrumental accompaniments that Giuliani's attunement to the romantic tradition of the strophic lied is seen.
The collection was published in 1817 by Riedl, on texts by Goethe, Matthisson, Schiller, Steigentesch, Tiedge and Reissig. The complete title of the work is the following:
SECHS LIEDER | von | Göthe, Schiller, Mathisson [sic], Tiedge u. a. | in Musik gesetz | mit Klavier- oder Guitarre- Begleitung | von | Mauro Giuliani | Werk 89 | WIEN und PEST | In J. Riedl Kunsthandlung.
In the original edition the guitar, voice and piano parts are printed in full score. For greater convenience in this version we have preferred to separate the version with guitar accompaniment from that with piano accompaniment.
