Product description

Wilhelm Theodor Johann Braun came from a musical dynasty with close family links, which for over 100 years - from 1769 until after 1880 - produced mainly oboists active in the Residenzen of Central Germany, whose virtuosic and sensitivegalant playing already mirrored the expressive sound of the romantic era. The son of Johann Friedrich (1759-1824), he was born in Ludwigslust on 20th. September 1796. He owed his virtuosity to his father, as did his older brother Carl Anton Philipp. He very soon (around 1809) joined the Royal Ensemble in Berlin, from where he undertook extremely successful concert tours in 1814, 1817/18 and 1821. With his wife, the singer Katharina Maria, daughter of his uncle Moritz Braun, he became a member of the Ensemble in Ludwigslust at Easter 1825, following a trial concert on 3rd June 1824. Still in demand as a soloist, he gave concerts in Berlin and elsewhere in 1829. In 1837 he switched to Schwerin, retiring in 1856. Wilhelm Theodor Johann died in Schwerin on 12th May 1867. Oboists of the period were out to 'impress by cheeky playing, piercing tone and marked staccato rather than by addressing the emotions'. This however did not correspond at all to Braun's views on the oboe's nature. The 'contrary new method of oboe playing' he developed was 'suited to the essence and character of the oboe'. He can therefore be considered the creator of pure 'soul music. Braun's works reflect this endeavour. The melodic verve, frequent tempo changes and minor inflections of his Concertino op. 12 are still indebted to the fading era of courtly virtuosity (despite his programmatic writings of 1823). However, Braun was one of the few to 'discover' home music-making; he addressed the string quartet, and brought Bach's celebrated keyboard works and 16 Quartets after Mozart's immortal works for fortepiano closer to the public. His own output is exciting: besides a clarinet concerto, his chamber music includes a Quintet for flute and strings op. 27, 2 string quartets op. 13, the Grand Quatuor op. 14, six further string quartets (1823, 1826, 1856-1858), an oboe quartet, the Adagio for obligato oboe and string quartet, and Adagio und Rondo for viola and string quartet. Piano music, vocal works and songs complete this wide range. Braun didn't neglect his own instrument to give gorgeous sounding gems in small forms. Apart from our 'Six / D U O S / très faciles / pour / Deux Hautbois / composés / par / GUILL. BRAUN / Oeuvre 1. / Prix 10 gl. / à Leipsic, chez Frederic Hofmeister. / 941 [Pl.-No.] 'he wrote a Grand Duo op. 23/1, two Duos op. 2 and - a delight for all viola players - a sonorous Duo for violin and viola op. 20, published by Amadeus (BP 469).
