The Polish composer and pianist Moritz Moszkowski (1854-1925) has been a highly acknowledged composer in the 2nd half of the 19th century. However, his name and work later fell into oblivion. The Spanish Dances, op. 12 is almost the only work by him known today. He composed these dances for piano four-handed in 1876. Later on he arranged it also for piano two-handed. The four-handed play being cultivated intensively in the bourgeois families of the 19th century, Moszkowski's Spanish Dances spread rapidly and made him a known composer. Even today, these salon pieces enchant with their lively Spanish rhythms and catchy melodies, which are shown to advantage especially by the flute. Togeth-er with the upper register of the violoncello the flute often forms attractive two-part textures. In the lower register the violoncello tonally supports the bass part of the piano. Due to the registers of the original work being suitable the keys in this arrangement could be maintained.
