Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller was born on 4th December 1806 in Regensburg, the son of composer and Capellmeister Friedrich August Burgmüller. Taught by his mother, a well-regarded music teacher who as Therese von Zandt was an occasional contributor to the celebrated Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung, Johann Friedrich soon learnt to play the piano. In 1807 the family moved to Düsseldorf, where his father was music director. Here, with his highly gifted younger brother Norbert, born in 1820, he spent his formative years. His father's early death meant that in 1824 the family had to accept help from count Franz von Nesselrode.
While Norbert was accepted as a pupil by Louis Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann in Kassel, Johann Friedrich turned to teaching and omposing in Basel, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. In 1833 he went to Paris, where as a sought-after teacher he was given French nationality in 1842. He died on 13th February 1874 in Beaulieu near Marolles-en-Hurepoix, Département Essonne. Norbert, intending to visit his brother in Paris, died on the way in Aachen; on 7th May 1836 he drowned in the bath after an epileptic fit.
Johann Friedrich Burgmüller's works are elegant, light and full of charm. Devoted almost exclusively to the piano, he gave his programmatically stylized pieces titles such as 'La Cachucha op. 36', 'L'Ange consolateur', 'Blaues Äuglein op. 93', 'Corbeille des roses op. 68', 'Fleurs Mélodiques', 'Les étincelles op. 97' and Murmures du Rhone op. 66'. He also left incidental music for the ballet Giselle by Adolphe Adam and the ballet La Péri to a libretto by Théophile Gautier. Furthermore, he composed accessible paraphrases on operas by Verdi, Bellini and others. And who could forget his numerous studies for young pianists, still appreciated today.
Burgmüller wrote very little chamber music. We present his Duos, whose rare combination is welcome, according to the undated first print, titled: 'TROIS / NOCTURNES / POUR / Violoncelle et Gitarre / dédiés à Monsieur / le Vicomte Gabriel Molitor / PAR / Frédéric Burgmüller. / MAYENCE / chez les fils de B. SCHOTT / Paris, London.'
