Giovanni Punto was the star horn player of his time. He was admired by his contemporaries for his technical brilliance as well as his great musicality and refined tone quality - characteristics also evident in his compositions, which include as many as 16 concerti, 21 quartets for horn and strings, horn trios, trios for flute and strings as well as 100 horn duos, works 'which considering their time are the most effective ever composed for this instrument.' Let us not conceal the fact that some early concerti and quartets printed under his name were transcriptions of works by Stamitz, Sterkel, Rosetti and others. The present Duos are an ideal introduction to ensemble playing in teaching. They appeared around 1825 as a set of parts from an unidentifiable Parisian publisher.
