Louis Diémer's Deux Pièces op. 35 (Romance and Intermezzo)are genre pieces with a hint of the Biedermeier style that charmingly capture the oboe's specific timbre and essential technical attributes; the subtitle of op. 52 'morceaux de concours pour hautbois', suggests they intend to cause a sensation and enhance the composer's reputation. The movements, featuring sequences and breathing spaces, are still attentive to oboists' breathing technique. They also have a bizarre playfulness, evident in complex series of modulations. The Deux Pièces op. 35, dedicated 'A Mon Ami Georges Gillet, Professeur au Conservatoire de Paris', were published in 1884 in Paris by Durand, while the Légende op. 52, a mandatory piece for the 'Concours du Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris' appeared in 1904. Both prints are most carefully done, their articulations and signs of expression almost pedantically precise.
